The past two weeks, 5 Galway WFC players were called up to Ireland's U19 squad for the UEFA Women's U19 Championship Elite Round that took place in Cork. For the first game against Austria, Chloe, Sadhbh, and Sinead were all in the starting line. Sinead was substituted out in the 57th minute, and the game concluded with a 1-1 draw.
The next match was against Spain. Sadhbh and Lucia were in the starting line. In the 13th minute, Sinead was substituted in. Unfortunately, Spain came out on top 3-0.
The last match saw Ireland facing Turkey. Again, Lucia and Sadhbh earned a starting position for this match, while Chloe was ruled out of this game due to injury. Sinead joined the match in the 46th minute, followed by Aoife replacing Lucia in the 77th minute. It was a tough match, but sadly Turkey won 2-0.
Despite these disappointing results, the women were in good spirits. They reflected on their time with the U19 squad, and have the following statements:
Aoife Thompson: "It was a huge moment for me getting called up for Ireland's U19 squad. It was an unforgettable and wonderful experience from start to finish."
Sinead Donovan: "This has been an unbelievable experience for myself, getting my first start in a European Championship against Austria. To play against Spain was a massive test and one of the hardest games I've played in."
Lucia Lobato: "Playing against Spain was a tough challenge, but also one of the best learning experiences for me."
